About Donovan’s Kids
Donovan’s Kids Camp is a nonprofit organization that empowers amputee children, kids with orthopedic differences or spina bifida, and U.S. veterans’ children to come together to discover how their differences make them both unique and still just regular kids. Through a FREE summer camp experience, our kids learn invaluable life skills that help them to engage, challenge and achieve.
Donovan’s Kids began with Co-Founder Michael Livingston, a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam conflict. In 2012, Michael watched a YouTube video of a group of veterans – who were all amputees – playing a softball game. That video inspired Michael to invite these heroes to Akron, Ohio, to play. It took three years to launch the first Wounded Warriors softball game here in Akron, but during that time, Michael traveled to watch the team play and had the opportunity to meet the team owners. When they invited him and his wife to attend one of their kids’ camps for amputees, something clicked, and the dream for Donovan’s Kids Camp was born.
In 2016, we held our first Donovan’s Kids Camp at the Rotary Camp in Akron. The camp had humble beginnings with only 10 kids in attendance. However, through generous donations and passionate leadership, the organization has quickly grown. In 2017, we were proud to host 30 campers.
Donovan’s Kids is named after two U.S. veterans who served during conflict:
Mr. Harry A. Donovan – Our camp’s namesake was a WWII Navy veteran who drove the boat that took General Douglas McArthur back to the Philippines. Mr. Donovan was wounded twice while serving in the Navy and was awarded the Purple Heart with two stars. After the war, Mr. Donovan came back to Akron, Ohio, enrolled at The University of Akron and became a CPA.
Mr. Harry A. Donovan, Jr. – Our second inspiration is a U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam. Mr. Donovan, Jr. was wounded six times while in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart with a Gold Star for his service. Mr. Donovan, Jr. also became a CPA after his service and is now retired.
Our dedicated leadership team helps keep our mission alive, so that we can help as many kids as possible benefit from the physical and social rewards of our camp.
